Our opinion

In advertising, there exists an addiction to Muppets. The loveable puppets are in constant demand, featuring in campaigns for brands as diverse as the UK’s baker Warburtons and tech giant Facebook. The reason is clear – they work. The presence of one of Jim Henson’s iconic creations can often elevate an ad to 4- or 5-Stars, such is their basic likeability, and their ability to turn any brand message into a singing, dancing fun-fest.

There’s a chance they will be over-exposed if used too much, but for now the shine is still there. Online delivery service DoorDash is the latest brand to realise its visions of buddying Big Bird, with an ad which modernises the Sesame Street classic with help from rapper Daveed Diggs. Sesame Street is an iconic American institution, which needs to be handled with care by marketers, and DoorDash have covered possible objections by pledging money to the show’s charity. The joyful ad and the charity angle have been enough for a strong 4.7-Star score, an excellent result for the growing brand.
