Full of Surprises

Our opinion

Santander’s employment of entertainers Ant and Dec as their brand ambassadors got off to a slightly shaky start. The campaign – involving the pair setting up their own rival bank (using Santander’s distinctive red branding) was clever and funny but also a little confusing.

But when the coronavirus pandemic struck, it offered Santander an opportunity for a reset, and handed them a situation where having two of Britain’s most familiar and best-liked faces could be a real advantage. It was an opportunity the bank took, putting together the best Covid-19 response ad of the year in the UK, with Ant and Dec popping up on Zoom to give an isolating fan a happy surprise. The cheerful tone suited the stars well and gave Santander one of the highest-rated banking ads we’ve ever seen. Hopefully the first of many 5-Star spots for Santander and Antandec.
