It’s unusual to find ITV making the ads, not showing them. But 2020 has been a rather unusual year. Back in the initial lockdown people took to their windows and porches every Thursday to clap doctors, nurses and other NHS staff who were working hard trying to handle the Covid-19 pandemic. It started as a grassroots thing but soon became a national event every week.
ITV realised that the people clapping were fighting hard themselves to stay healthy and happy, and used Mental Health Week as an opportunity to give the carers a ‘right to reply’, clapping the people at home who were encouraging them every week. It was an opportunity not just to say thanks, but also for the public to see the faces of the people they were relying on.
