2026 has seen QSR brand Panera undertake a brand refresh with agency 72&Sunny, with a new positioning and approach alongside new corporate and marketing leadership. The brand’s platform “It Just Meals Better”, promotes the chain’s versatility as a dine-in destination, with a hero ad putting a spotlight on the many occasions Panera offers its customers the perfect meal, from teen hangouts to family outings to tricky meet-ups with exes.

It’s part of a trend across the QSR industry of stressing the physical, social and in-person elements of dining, capitalising on chain restaurants’ and coffee shops’ ability to be a place to catch up face to face. In a wider context of anxieties over screen time, loneliness and the decline of hangout-friendly “third places”, it’s a timely positioning. And Panera’s reputation as a casual, tasty place to grab a soup, sandwich or drink makes it one of the brands which can make the in-person claim most authentically.

Alongside the wider “It Just Meals Better” campaign, though, there are lots of shorter and sharper promotional ads designed to promote particular menu items or deals. The one we’re looking at this week is for Panera’s new 2026 drinks menu, in particular their move into the world of frescas – light drinks that combine fruit flavors like Cherry Lime with real fruit.

Across the wider Panera brand refresh this is the most literally refreshing element. The Energy Refreshers and Frescas colourful, eye-catching, exciting drinks built for summer and Gen Z appeal. It’s no surprise that this quick-hit 15 second ad emphasizes youth, with young customers excitedly sipping, bumping and posing with these very photogenic menu items.

Typically you’d expect this kind of ad to excel on short-term metrics like Spike and Brand Fluency, and Panera does indeed land a Spike score that predicts Strong short-term sales boosts for the brand, with strong Fast Fluency too. But the interesting thing here is that the sheer ebullience of the ad also makes it a winner on long-term Star Rating, too, with its 4.0-Star score sitting well above the category average.

That’s an unusually good score for a 15-second product-centred promo ad, sitting above plenty of full-length hero spots for campaigns in the Test Your Ad rankings for the QSR category. Panera should see it as confirmation that it’s on the right track with the wider campaign, and that fresh, colourful, eye-catching products and ad designs do more than just drive sales. They’re an emotional winner too.
